Groundwater sustainability

Page Content
Groundwater sustainability relates to the development and use of groundwater to meet current and future pruposes without causing unacceptable consequences. Find out about the factors that contribute to local, regional, or statewide groundwater, shortages, the strategies that can be implemented to promote a sustainable groundwater supply, and what resources or tools are needed to implement these strategies successfully.

Current project

The National Ground Water Association has been working with the Association of American State Geologists, the Ground Water Protection Council, and the Interstate Council on Ground Water Policy to gather information to build a national picture of groundwater monitoring. We have concluded the compilation of responses to the Joint State Ground Water Quality and Level Monitoring surveys relating to state and regional ambient groundwater. Click here for the results to both surveys.

Legislation and regulations impacting the groundwater industry

  • Groundwater, level and quality monitoring (PDF) — read more about NGWA's perspective on national groundwater water level and quality monitoring.
  • Groundwater quality and desalination questions (PDF) — this report identifies some of the water quality issues and questions related to groundwater use.
  • Climate Change Legislation Design White Papers — the Committee on Energy and Commerce and its Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality are issuing a series of Climate Change Legislation Design White Papers as the next step toward enactment of a mandatory, economywide climate change program.
