presented by J. Michael “Mike” Hawthorne, PG, REM
This brown bag Webinar is brought to you by the NGWA Aquifer Protection Interest Group.
During this half-hour presentation, you will learn how diagnostic gauge plots (DGPs) provide an essential tool to diagnose unconfined vs. confined or perched LNAPL (light non-aqueous phase liquid) to correctly identify critical confining elevations from a fluid hydraulics perspective, as well as how to estimate the mobile LNAPL interval as an improved input over apparent NAPL thickness (ANT) for LNAPL models.
Historically, most sites with LNAPLs present in the subsurface have been mischaracterized on the basis of ANT gauged in wells. As documented by others, the vertical equilibrium (VEQ) model for LNAPL demonstrates that similar ANT values in different soils represent widely differing LNAPL volumes.
Various modeling tools exist to correctly characterize LNAPL sites on the basis of LNAPL saturations, volumes, and transmissivities. However, most of these tools include ANT as a model input. The VEQ model does not address the problem of exaggerated ANT values due to differing LNAPL hydrogeologic conditions (unconfined vs. confined or perched LNAPL).
Introductory to intermediate.
