presented by J. Michael “Mike” Hawthorne, PG, REM
This brown bag Webinar is brought to you by the NGWA Aquifer Protection Interest Group.
This half-hour online presentation focuses on the implementation and advantages of LNAPL (light non-aqueous phase liquid) transmissivity (Tn) via manual skimming tests. Field implementation and data analysis methods are presented, along with useful type curves as tools to estimate Tn from skimming data or to predict skimming recovery values from Tn data.
Tn is rapidly gaining acceptance as a preferred metric for LNAPL characterization and remediation over apparent NAPL thickness (ANT) gauged in wells. Tn varies directly with aquifer permeability and LNAPL saturation (as relative permeability), incorporates fluid properties, and is a consistent universal metric for LNAPL recoverability.
Guidance for the calculation of Tn via baildown testing, manual skimming testing, recovery data analysis, and tracer testing is available from ASTM International (E2856-11). This guidance will substantially improve standardization and reliability of Tn values. Information on baildown testing is broadly available in the technical literature, but the other methods have not been as widely evaluated.
Intermediate to advanced.
