presented by Mark Borchardt, Ph.D.
Learn about the recent findings from the Wisconsin WAHTER (Water And Health Trial for Enteric Risks), Study designed to estimate the fraction of acute gastrointestinal illness stemming from municipal drinking water drawn from non-disinfected groundwater supplies.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, groundwater supplies for drinking water are not necessarily free of microbial contamination. Human gastrointestinal viruses possess characteristics that favor subsurface transport to groundwater and more often than not, virus occurrence is not correlated with positive tests for standard indicators of water sanitary quality.
