Conference overview

Explore potential solutions to groundwater problems in fractured media environments — which occur throughout the world and are among the most complex and challenging to characterize and remediate — during this conference.

Discussed will be technological advances; advanced modeling techniques; scalability tools; and regional, national, and international initiatives — all of which provide a variety of options and resources to understand the fate and transport of contaminants, and improve remedial actions and source water protection strategies.

This conference will also explore questions such as:

  • How do observations in individual boreholes relate to groundwater flow systems across a basin?
  • What lessons have we learned from previous work at thousands of contaminated sites and how do these relate to emerging issues such as new contaminants and unconventional gas development?
  • How do we make the best use of 30-plus years of research?
  • What innovative approaches are being developed and applied by private industry and government entities?

presented by Kent S. Novakowski, Ph.D.

Novakowski is a professor and head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, whose research has focused on the development of characterization methods for improving the understanding of fundamental flow and transport processes in discrete fractures at the field scale. Read about his talk. Learn more about him.
