Join fellow groundwater professionals at this two-day conference that discusses the unique groundwater challenges, old and new, common to the Midwestern United States.
The impacts of flooding events and use of agricultural chemicals are two situations that have long-term effects on groundwater quality. Monitoring activities are critical to assessing, mitigating, and improving groundwater quality — and this relies on new technologies and processes.
During the past decade, equally significant groundwater issues have surfaced related to oil and shale gas production, the demand for large quantities of groundwater, and the challenge of what to do with the wastewater/produced water from hydraulic fracturing. The water/energy nexus is — and will continue to — present challenges and opportunities in the Midwest and elsewhere.
While the challenges continue, so does the potential technological solutions for prediction, prevention, mitigation, and treatment on a regional and national scale. This conference will offer valuable insight into these issues and shed light on potential solutions.

Dr. Frank W. Schwartz, professor at Ohio State University and Ohio Eminent Scholar, will deliver the Keynote Address. Schwartz has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, coauthored two textbooks in hydrogeology, and is currently serving as the sixth editor-in-chief of NGWA’s Ground Water®. Schwartz is a fellow of both the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America. He’s also a former Birdall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer. Schwartz has been the recipient of numerous awards including NGWA’s M. King Hubbert Award, NGWA’s Scientists and Engineers Division’s John Hem Award, and the O.E. Meinzer Award from the Hydrogeology Division of GSA.
