Phytoremediation of Common Groundwater Contaminants (#136)

Page Content

San Antonio, Texas • February 29-March 1, 2012

presented by James E. Landmeyer and Don A. Vroblesky

Course description

This two-day short course will focus on the history, theory, and application of phytoremediation to solve common groundwater contamination problems.

Many contaminant compounds detected in groundwater can be remediated by using phytoremediation processes. Contaminant concentrations can be decreased at phytoremediation sites by direct uptake of dissolved-phase contaminants, by uptake of contaminant vapors, and through root-facilitated bioremediation of residual contamination in the unsaturated zone. Once in trees, the contaminant compounds are decreased by volatilization, diffusion, sequestration, or enzymatically transformed into unregulated byproducts.

Experience from the implementation of phytoremediation systems at multiple sites that are characterized by BTEX, MTBE, chlorinated solvents such as PCE and TCE, and PAH groundwater contamination will be described in detail. Practical field demonstrations of relevant assessment approaches will be performed.

Course objectives

During this course, you will learn:

  • The fundamentals of phytoremediation of common groundwater contaminants
  • How to install and monitor a phytoremediation system for success in meeting regulatory goals
  • How to assess work plans that include phytoremediation as a potential remedial strategy.

Who should attend?

  • State and federal regulators,
  • Private consultants
  • Hydrogeologists
  • Academia.

Education level

Introductory; you should know basic groundwater hydrology. An introduction to plant physiology related to water use will be provided.

NGWA awards continuing education credits

This course is worth 1.5 CEUs.
