Introduction to Statistical Methods for Environmental Monitoring (#174)

Page Content

Denver, Colorado • August 6-7, 2012

presented by Dulal K. Bhaumik, Ph.D., and Subhash Aryal, Ph.D.

Course description

You will be introduced to some of the basic fundamental statistical concepts that can help you in your job during this two-day course designed to benefit to public health professionals, regulators, and engineers involved in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting environmental monitoring data.

The basics to be covered include:

  • False positive and negative rates
  • Experimentwise error rates
  • Tests of normality.

More advanced statistical methods to be discussed include:

  • Construction of lognormal and gamma prediction and tolerance intervals
  • Trend analysis and strategies for assessment
  • Corrective monitoring relevant for environmental monitoring.

In addition, you’ll be introduced to problems associated with some commonly and frequently used statistical methods such as the:

  • Original errors in the RCRA regulation based on Cochran’s approximation to the Behrens-Fisher t-statistic
  • Newer regulations that continue to advocate use of parametric and nonparametric analysis of variance for both hazardous and municipal solid waste facilities.

Course objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify problems inherent to environmental monitoring data
  • Verify distributional assumptions, conduct hypothesis testing, and construct confidence intervals
  • Construct prediction and tolerance intervals for groundwater monitoring data
  • Apply statistical methods for assessment and corrective action monitoring
  • Avoid common mistakes and methods in groundwater monitoring applications.

Who should attend?

  • Engineers
  • Governmental regulators
  • Epidemiologists and biostatisticians
  • Researchers in environmental science.

Education level

Introductory to intermediate; though not a course requirement, Statistical Methods for Groundwater Monitoring, second edition, is a recommended reading and reference resource for this course.

NGWA awards continuing education credits

This course is worth 1.5 CEUs.
