Course description

This course examines the costs and benefits of our uses of groundwater, which has become scarce in some locations and a sink for pollutants in others. The course provides an overview of economic frameworks to evaluate the costs and benefits, develops examples through a range of methods, and provides you with capabilities to initiate economic evaluations of your groundwater projects. You’re encouraged to bring your own examples for discussion and a calculator.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Overview of groundwater in the economy and around the world
  • Economic fundamentals
  • Framework for evaluating benefits and costs of a groundwater project or program
  • Organizing a cost-benefit analysis for a groundwater project or program
  • Methods for estimating costs and benefits
  • Examples of cost-benefit analyses for groundwater projects or programs
  • Economic aspects of sustainable groundwater use and transboundary issues.

Course objectives

By attending the course, you will learn about the:

  • Scale and extent of groundwater uses in the economy and internationally
  • Significance of laws in determining economic use of groundwater
  • Economic supply-and-demand processes and production functions related to groundwater
  • Groundwater resource characterization affecting economic analysis
  • Application of market and nonmarket conditions, and their influence on private and public groundwater goods and services
  • Organization for cost-benefit analyses, including decision criteria and rules
  • Principles and approaches for initiating cost-benefit analyses of groundwater projects and programs
  • Methods and their application for developing costs and benefits of groundwater services
  • Practical use of concepts through working on problems and presentation of international examples during the course.

Who should attend?

Anyone who is responsible for groundwater projects, programs, or policy development for which their economics, costs, and benefits are fundamental to understanding or informing decisions related to those projects or programs.

Education level

The course material will be presented so that a basic knowledge of economics will enable the participants to understand its content.
