Site Characterization in Support of Fractured Rock Remediation Projects (#502)

Page Content

Denver, Colorado • October 17-18, 2011

presented by Frederick L. Paillet and Thomas P. Ballestero

Course description

Fractured rock groundwater systems test the limits of hydrogeology as it is practiced today. Site characterization in fractured rock aquifer studies is an inherently multiple-scaled effort, where characterizing fractured rock systems is the creation, development, testing, and refinement of the conceptual hydrogeologic model.

This course reviews groundwater basics, develops the tools to characterize fractured rock sites, and clearly presents the utility of the conceptual hydrogeologic model.

Course objectives

This course will cover:
  • Hydrogeology and fractured systems
  • Geophysics and remote sensing
  • Drilling and well sampling
  • Fracture sampling and characterization
  • Well and formation testing
  • The conceptual model
  • Selecting drilling sites from geophysical selection
  • Specify and design suite of logs
  • Fracture interpretation from logs
  • Flowmeter test analysis (model application)
  • Aquifer test analysis
  • Multiwell aquifer test.

  • Engineers
  • Geologists
  • Hydrologists
  • Project managers
  • Environmental professionals.
