Course overview

This three-day NGWA course examines the concepts, theories, and procedures in hydrogeology. Discussions address a range of issues including:

  • Movement and occurrence of groundwater
  • Transmissivity
  • Hydraulic head and gradient
  • Aquifer test procedures and analysis
  • Water-quality characterization
  • Solute transport
  • Plume configuration and delineation
  • Capture zone analysis
  • Groundwater modeling
  • Remediation techniques.

Based on past course evaluations, the curriculum has been upgraded to include more discussion on the principles and practice of groundwater remediation for hydrogeological site investigations. In-class exercises present and reinforce practical application of various mathematical formulae describing flow to wells. The course format consists of theoretical lectures, practical discussions (i.e., the effects of hydrogeological conditions on well placement and design), and hands-on exercises.

Learning objectives

During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Distinguish physical properties
  • Develop the conceptual model — hydrostratigraphic units and the flow system illustrated in glacial tills, sand and gravel, sandstone/shale/limestone, basalt flows, volcanics, alluvial valley deposits, and fluvial deposits
  • Analyze flow directions and velocities
  • Use the Thiem and Theis equations
  • Employ the Theis type-curve method
  • Apply the Cooper-Jacob method illustrated in a buried-glacial valley setting
  • Utilize the Bouwer and Rice method in slug tests in unconfined aquifers
  • Determine water quality characterization and water resource management
  • Identify techniques of computer modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport.

Course materials

You will need to bring a calculator.

In addition to the course notes in a three-ring binder, you will receive:

  • Practical Problems in Ground Water Hydrogeology by Bair
  • A set of acetate type-curves prepared for you to keep for your own analyses of aquifer test data.

Who should attend?

  • Those wanting to advance their knowledge in groundwater
  • Those seeking a refresher course of the principles of groundwater
  • Professionals in other disciplines wanting to broaden their knowledge base in the area of groundwater.
