Receive practical information and guidelines useful for evaluating natural attenuation and applying monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as a remediation approach for contaminated groundwater during this two-day short course.
While many state and federal agencies recognize the viability of using MNA, you must be able to support its use by adequate evidence of its effectiveness, which requires a sound understanding of natural attenuation mechanisms in order to evaluate their potential efficacy in achieving remedial goals. This course will provide you with that understanding. You will be provided the conceptual and technical background necessary to evaluate natural attenuation mechanisms and their interaction with source and transport processes at sites with organic and inorganic chemicals. You will learn how evidence requires adequate site characterization to determine solute plume behavior as well as how to evaluate natural attenuation processes, make realistic estimates of attenuation rates and source decay rates, and design an adequate monitoring program to show that natural attenuation is occurring as expected.
In-depth discussions of the mechanisms of natural attenuation, data collection and analysis, quantification of contaminant transport and fate processes, and regulatory considerations involved in implementing MNA as a remedy for groundwater contamination will also be presented.
Upon completion this course, you will be able to:
