Course overview

You will receive instruction and practice in producing effective technical and scientific communications in this short course that presents principles and strategies for good writing, with attention to conveying information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. The focus will be on adapting and communicating technical information for different purposes.

This informal, interactive class will include a mix of lecture material, discussion, and hands-on exercises that promote active learning and illustrate key concepts. If time permits, it may also include one-on-one consultations.

While course materials will be provided, you should bring a laptop or netbook computer.

Learning objectives

This course will help you to:

  • Appreciate the importance of effective writing in business, research, and industry
  • Identify the essential characteristics of successful writing and develop strategies to incorporate those features in your work
  • Assess readers’ needs and develop documents at the right technical level for the target audience
  • Understand features and conventions of different document types, e.g., managerial, reporting, regulatory, scholarly
  • Develop a constructive process for drafting, revising, and overcoming blocks
  • Master issues of proper style and grammar
  • Enhance visual elements of your documents.
