This course is designed to provide you with a
thorough understanding of the principles of geochemistry, as
understanding the geochemical aspects is an important step in completing
a successful site assessment or remediation project. While many people
have a solid understanding of hydrological processes, the chemical
aspects of the site that largely impact contaminant fate and transport,
and determine the outcome of the remediation effort, are not as commonly
understood or appreciated.
Basic chemical interactions occurring between
water and soil/aquifer material that determine the composition of
natural water and affect the migration of contaminants will be covered
in this course, as will the anticipated efficiency of remediation
practices. Data collection, presentation, and interpretation of results
will also be discussed.
Once this fundamental knowledge is obtained,
it will be possible to integrate it into particular contamination
situations and evaluate remediation systems given the site-specific
