This two-day course will provide you with a working knowledge of groundwater monitoring systems, sampling, and field measurements through both classroom instruction and field exercises including hands-on instruction.
The classroom sessions will begin with an introduction to the rationale and regulatory aspects of groundwater quality monitoring, including historical perspectives. The physical (i.e., hydrogeologic and geologic) environment of groundwater occurrence and flow will be covered with an emphasis on sources of variability in subsurface systems and how this impacts groundwater monitoring/sampling strategies and success.
The chemical and biological aspects of chemical contaminants in groundwater will be discussed, supplemented by a discussion of monitoring requirements. Monitoring well design, construction, well purging, and sampling — and how these relate to monitoring representativeness and performance — will be covered with summary comments, and data interpretation and reporting.
On the second day, field exercises will be conducted to familiarize you with the detailed aspects of well performance, purging, sampling, and field measurements including special field techniques for collection and analysis of redox-sensitive constituents and dissolved gas samples, often used in natural attenuation/biodegradation evaluations. The emphasis will be on demonstration of techniques, hands-on instruction, and fielding questions.
