Lesson plans from NGWA

Page Content
Below are lesson plans that have been prepared about groundwater and related subjects. The materials can be adapted to fit different age levels (except where noted).

Water introduction

Water Introduction

A basic introduction to water on the Earth.  Includes a overview of amounts of water as well as an overview of different types of water resources on the earth.

Groundwater

Ground Water Introduction and Demonstration

Includes general definitions and discussion points about groundwater.  Demonstration is designed to show the many different features that can be found beneath the Earth.

Make Your Own Ground Water Model

The follow up lesson to the above listed groundwater introduction and demo.  The next step in the process is to build your own demo profile to test different sediments to see what effect they have on recharge rates, permeability, and porosity values.

Darcy's Law

This lesson is aimed more toward middle and high school level students.  It teaches the ways Darcy's law is used to predict different scendario's pertaining to groundwater.

Aquifers (middle and high school level)

How Water Flow in Aquifers

Teaches how water moves through an aquifer as well as how and why water storage in an aquifer changes over time.n  Includes information on an activity that explores numerous properties of water.

Making an Aquifer Model

A follow-up lesson to "How Water Flows in Aquifers"; this lesson teaches students more in-depth knowledge of aquifers and how they are an important component of the hydrologic cycle.

Measuring Water Storage in Aquifers
Following the introductory lesson and the activity that created an aquifer model; this activity builds on the previous lessons by determining the type of material that best contributes to aquifer water storageprior to beginning this activity.

Usability of Aquifer Water
Discusses why aquifers are prized drinking water sources and the reasons behind the need for water treatment.

Wetlands

Wetlands Curriculum-Lesson Plan I: What Exactly is a Wetland?

Discusses the different criteria used to define a wetland

Wetlands Curriculum-Lesson Plan II: The Importance of Wetlands

Expands on the importance of wetlands and wetland preservation

Wetlands Curriculum-Lesson Plan III: Types of Wetlands

Teaches wetland identification by using the features unique to each kind of wetland

Wetlands Curriculum-Lesson Plan IIII: Building a Wetland Filter

Create a simulated wetland to understand how wetlands actually filter and clean the water

Wetlands Curriculum-Lesson Plan IX: Building a Fen

Construct your own version of a fen

Precipitates, Solution and Limestone Marl Deposition Activity

A demo activity involving limestone
