NGWA’s National Groundwater Awareness Week makes a splash!
The numbers are still not in, but by all appearances National Groundwater Awareness Week (AW) hit new heights this year.
A deluge of Web site, Facebook, and Twitter postings; newspaper, TV, and radio stories; and public events from the state to the local level blanketed the country before and during AW, March 11-17, 2012.
“I'm pretty confident we’ll make 350-plus Web sites this year, which was our goal. Exposure on Web sites is one key indicator of how well our Awareness Week messages are getting out,” said NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens. “It takes a lot of Web surfing to get a good tally, but this was a big year, no doubt.”
Additional positive indicators include:
A record 25 national promotional partners publicized AW
For the first time, news releases were issued by all NGWA Affiliate States jointly with NGWA

.
Just a small sampling of public sector, private sector, health, environmental, and news organizations promoting AW were:
Iowa Departments of Health and Natural Resources
U.S. EPA
McHenry County (IL) Health Department
Pork Network
American Farm Bureau Federation
Helena (MT)
Independent Record
LaCrosse County (WI) Health Department
KOSA TV in West Texas
Mercury News
(San Jose, CA)
U.S. Geological Survey homepage
Tennessee Departments of Health and Environmental Conservation.
Treyens said he plans to have a more complete wrap-up by April.
“In the meantime, mark your calendars for
Protect Your Groundwater Day
on September 11. This will be the third year for this event, and it’s another excellent chance to promote groundwater and water well stewardship to private well owners and the public at large,” Treyens said.
