NGWA, Western Michigan University offer aquifer and slug tests short course
Page Content
(WESTERVILLE, OH — May 9, 2011) A three-day course on the theory and practices of successful pump and slug testing of water wells will be offered May 19-21 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, by the National Ground Water Association and Western Michigan University.
One of the key skills hydrogeologists and environmental consultants should master is how to characterize an aquifer’s response to pumping or slug testing a well. These indispensable tests have been developed and refined over decades to reliably define an aquifer’s ability to be used by people for beneficial purposes. An aquifer’s transmissivity and permeability are essential attributes that determine whether and how contamination can be remediated, and how much water can be supplied sustainably by pumping.
The course instructors are:
Dr. Willis Weight, PE, Carroll College, Montana, author of the Hydrogeology Field Manual, second edition (McGraw Hill, 2008), instructor, and head of the Montana Tech Hydrogeology Field Course
Dr. Duane Hampton, Western Michigan University, instructor of the Aquifer and Slug Testing module of the Western Michigan University's Hydrogeology Field Course.
During course activities, participants will:
Set up, conduct, and analyze a multiwell pump test
Discover how to properly conduct pressure and vacuum slug tests from Dan Green, a slug test expert
Conduct and analyze slug tests using regular and super-sized physical slugs
Learn to use AQTESOLV 4.5 to analyze the results of these tests.
To register, visit the Western Michigan University Web site.
