The Webinar will be presented by Ian Clark, Ph.D., professor of isotope hydrology, University of Ottawa, Canada.

Hydrogeologists are commonly faced with problems of tracing groundwater flowp​aths and contaminant sources. Used in conjunction with routine hydrogeological methods, environmental isotopes help resolve such problems. This Webinar introduces the basics of using environmental isotopes to trace groundwater origin and pollutants.

The presentation will be informal, with questions and answers throughout, and will focus on the following topics:

• Oxygen-18 and deuterium in the hydrological cycle
• Isotopes as tracers of groundwater
• Carbon-13 and how it is used to trace carbon and carbon-based contaminants
• Nitrogen-15 in nitrate and ammonia to trace the origin and fate of these contaminants
• A brief overview of tritium and radiocarbon for dating groundwater.

The Webinar will be presented at a level appropriate for all groundwater professionals including environmental consultants, consulting engineers and geologists, and water supply engineers.
