NGWA short course focuses on environmental geochemistry of metals

(WESTERVILLE, OH — September 7, 2011) The National Ground Water Association will offer the short course, “Environmental Geochemistry of Metals: Investigation and Remediation,” October 31-November 2 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This three-day short course provides practical information needed to effectively evaluate intrinsic remediation and chemical manipulation of sites contaminated with metals, nonmetals, and radionuclides. Chemicals of concern discussed in this short course include aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, boron, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrogen, perchlorate, selenium, silver, thallium, uranium, vanadium, and zinc. Intrinsic remediation of several radionuclides is also covered.

In this course, you also will learn about:

Fundamentals of metals/inorganic geochemistry
Redox potential, capacity, and reactions
Acid/base reactions and mineral equilibrium
Adsorption processes
Natural attenuation of metals
Chemical manipulation of aquifer material
Neutralization and in situ vitrification
Injected oxidants and reductants
Permeable reactive barriers
Geochemical modeling of water/rock interactions, intrinsic remediation, and chemical manipulation.

This intermediate- to advanced-level course is suited to chemists, engineers, geologists, hydrologists, project managers, and risk assessors.
