Web site provides practical help to households with water wells

Page Content

(WESTERVILLE, OH — February 15, 2012) The nonprofit National Ground Water Association urges people who own household water wells to visit its Web site Wellowner.org for practical information about how to care for water wells and groundwater.

“A water well system is a complex, engineered system designed to deliver a dependable supply of drinking water,” said NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens. “Well owners are responsible for making sure the system is maintained and the water quality safe. Wellowner.org is like an owner’s manual.”

The Web site contains sections including:

  • Basics: Types of wells, planning for a well, septic systems, and well videos
  • Maintenance: Annual checkup, maintaining your well, homeowner checklist, well logs, restoring flow, water pressure, unused wells, iron bacteria/biofouling, and well cleaning
  • Water quality: Water testing, well flooding, groundwater protection, state water quality profiles, and selected water quality issues
  • Finding a contractor: How to find a contractor, Contractor Lookup, certified contractors, licensing, and financing
  • Geothermal heat pumps
  • Groundwater: Understanding groundwater, hydrologic cycle, drought, educator resources, groundwater supply and use, and conservation.

Wellowner.org also can help viewers calculate their water use, determine their water footprint, and find places to properly dispose of hazardous household substances.
