National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation announces student awards

Page Content

(WESTERVILLE, OH — June 1, 2012) The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation awarded a total of $3,000 in Farvolden Awards to four students for paper or poster presentations made at the 2012 NGWA Ground Water Summit that took place in May in Garden Grove, California.

Given in honor of the late Dr. Robert Farvolden, former senior science counsel for the National Ground Water Association, the $750 scholarships were awarded based on the quality of the presentation, content (including contribution to groundwater science, engineering, management, or policy), and demonstrated insight on the chosen topic.

The awards for 2011 through 2013 are underwritten by S.S. Papadopulos & Associates Inc.

The 2012 Farvolden Award winners are:

  • Zijuan Deng, Flinders University, Australia, for the paper, “Cautions in Using Chloride Mass Balance Method for Groundwater Recharge Estimation in Coastal Areas with Vegetation Changes”
  • Waldy Fernandez, Texas A&M University, Kingsville, Texas, for the poster, “Assessment of Radon and Other Groundwater Quality Parameters Near a Uranium Mining Site”
  • Rebecca Nelson, Stanford Law School, Palo Alto, California, for the paper, “Groundwater and Ecosystems: A Survey of Regulatory Mechanisms for Making the Connection”
  • Elizabeth Schaller, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, for the poster, “Influence of Springs WATER Geochemistry on Geomorphology and Vegetation Cover at Springs Ecosystems.”
