(WESTERVILLE, OH — September 27, 2012) William “Bill” M. Alley, Ph.D., retired chief of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Office of Groundwater, has received a Life Member Award from the National Ground Water Association for special service in the furtherance of the groundwater industry and NGWA.
The award will be presented in December at the 2012 NGWA Groundwater Expo and Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
Alley worked as the USGS Office of Groundwater Chief from 1993 until last January. His NGWA contributions include serving as a member on the board of directors of the NGWA scientists and engineers membership division from 2006-2009, an associate editor of Ground Water® from 1998-2005, cochair of the 2007 Ground Water Summit, and a member of the Nominating Committee from 2006 to the present.
“In addition to Bill’s extensive service in these realms, he has taken on the crucial role of facilitating two-way communication between the USGS and NGWA members,” wrote nominator Eric Reichard of the USGS Water Resources Division. “This includes disseminating information on USGS groundwater activities to NGWA members, and ensuring that the USGS is aware of the interests and technical needs of those members.”
Alley has been the senior author of numerous papers and reports, and was the “guiding force” behind numerous USGS circulars that summarize the current state of knowledge on important groundwater topics, Reichard said. Among those circulars are:
Alley’s contributions to the groundwater industry have been acknowledged through numerous awards including NGWA’s John Hem Excellence in Science & Engineering Award (2001), and the USGS’s Meritorious Service Award (1991), Superior Service Award (1988), and Special Achievement and Star awards (1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1999, and 2003).
NGWA, a nonprofit organization composed of U.S. and international groundwater professionals — contractors, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, scientists, and engineers — is dedicated to advancing groundwater knowledge. NGWA’s vision is to be the leading groundwater association that advocates the responsible development, management, and use of water.
