(WESTERVILLE, OH — September 27, 2012) Jim Wright of National Exploration, Wells and Pumps in Shawnee, Kansas, has received the National Ground Water Association’s Individual Safety Advocate Award.
The award recognizes a person who has made significant contributions to promoting, improving, maintaining, and enhancing safety in daily working operations. It will be presented in December at the NGWA Groundwater Expo and Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
While with his previous employer, WDC Exploration & Wells, the company reached 1.75 million hours with no lost-time incidents in 2.5 years. Now, as compliance manager for environment, health, safety, and quality at his current company, Wright has set his sights on a full year with no recordable safety incidents.
“Jim Wright proves on a daily basis he is more than an advocate for safety — he talks the talk and even more importantly walks the walk,” said nominator Rob Caho on behalf of the Safety Subcommittee. “His active service to NGWA has exceeded his tenure with our Safety Subcommittee, where he was a selfless contributor to the weekly safety sheet package and the soon-to-be-published NGWA Model Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manual.”
Among the other notable NGWA safety projects to which Wright contributed is the Drill Safe, Drill Smart DVD that debuted in December 2010.
Upon learning of the award, Wright said the inspiration for his work is his vision that “every member of this industry goes home safe at the end of the day. Whenever I read about a work-related loss in our industry it hurts, but it drives me forward to work harder at spreading the word of safety. We as an industry can work accident free if we all try.”
NGWA, a nonprofit organization composed of U.S. and international groundwater professionals — contractors, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, scientists, and engineers — is dedicated to advancing groundwater knowledge. NGWA’s vision is to be the leading groundwater association that advocates the responsible development, management, and use of water.
