(WESTERVILLE, OH — September 27, 2012) The Water Replenishment District of Southern California has received a 2012 Special Recognition Award from the National Ground Water Association.
The Special Recognition Award is presented to an individual or organization that demonstrates dedication, service, and commitment to the groundwater industry and community through involvement and achievement on a local or regional level. The award will be presented in December at the NGWA Groundwater Expo and Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
WRD manages two of the most utilized groundwater basins in Southern California, providing more than a third of the water used by nearly four million people living within the district’s boundaries. WRD’s Water Independence Now program, started in 2006, seeks to completely eliminate dependence on imported water in the next 15 years to ensure future water security for the region by developing local resources to create a locally sustainable groundwater supply.
This year, one WIN project was completed in time for the rainy season — a pipeline to connect two major spreading grounds. The interconnection pipeline will result in capture and spreading for groundwater replenishment for an additional 1,300 acre-feet of local stormwater. Preliminary engineering is nearing completion on expansion of the Leo J. Vander Lans Advanced Treatment Plant to double the amount of water for injection into the Alamitos Barrier Expansion for a total of 6,000 acre-feet per year.
The cornerstone of WIN is the Groundwater Reliability Improvement Program — a multiagency project to help drought-proof the region. GRIP is anticipated to replace 21,000 acre-feet of imported water in the Central Basin.
NGWA, a nonprofit organization composed of U.S. and international groundwater professionals — contractors, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, scientists, and engineers — is dedicated to advancing groundwater knowledge. NGWA’s vision is to be the leading groundwater association that advocates the responsible development, management, and use of water.
