(WESTERVILLE, OH — March 22, 2017) Representative Tom Reed (R-New York), pictured at right, received the National Ground Water Association’s first-ever Industry Champion Award from NGWA CEO Kevin McCray, CAE, at a presentation in Washington, D.C., on March 21.
The NGWA Industry Champion Award was created to honor leaders helping groundwater professionals. It complements the Groundwater Protector Award, which recognizes people in government, industry, and the private sector for their public service efforts in conjunction with groundwater conservation and protection.
Representing the 8th district of New York, Reed is a former mayor and small business owner, and a champion for increasing energy independence and creating a competitive environment for all forms of energy. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for forming tax policy in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Reed has been a champion of the geothermal heat pump industry, working to achieve parity among renewable energy technologies through his introduction of the Technologies for Energy Security Act. The bill aims to level the playing field for geothermal heat pumps by providing a tax credit for commercial and residential installation of the technology. Currently, only solar and wind receive a tax credit.
Geothermal heat pump tax credits expired on December 31, 2016. While the Technologies for Energy Security Act did not become law last year, the bill was reintroduced this year and currently has 50 cosponsors. NGWA is working with a broad coalition to help pass the legislation and reinstate the tax credits. The legislation was a focus of the recent 2017 NGWA Groundwater Fly-In, where NGWA members visited Washington, D.C., to help build support of it.
“Representative Reed is the ideal person to win the first-ever NGWA Industry Champion Award,” says NGWA Government Affairs Director Lauren Schapker. “He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the geothermal heat pump industry and championed parity among renewable energy sources. NGWA is looking forward to working with him more and helping pass the Technologies for Energy Security Act.”
