Certified Vertical Closed Loop Driller

CVCLD_Logo_2c_2010.jpgAdvances in geothermal technologies and their usage created the need for a specific voluntary certification designation for geothermal drillers. NGWA responded to this need with the designation of Certified Vertical Closed Loop Driller (CVCLD).

The CVCLD is considered an independent designation from the CWD or CWD/PI. The designation reflects an individual who has passed a written exam administered by NGWA that evaluates an individual’s knowledge of the skills and competencies associated with constructing a loop well.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be at least 20 years old.
  • Applicant must have 24 consecutive months experience constructing loop wells or conventional water supply wells.

Exam information

To earn the CVCLD designation, you must pass the 75 multiple-choice question Vertical Closed Loop (VCL) exam.

The exam encompasses the skills and competencies reflected on the drilling operations DACUM and the geothermal vertical closed loop drilling operations DACUM. Exams can be scheduled through NGWA’s third-party testing facility by contacting PSI LaserGrade at 800 211.2754 (360 896.9111 outside the United States).

VCL exam fees

  • NGWA members: $125
  • Nonmembers: $300

Preparing for the exam

Study materials for the exam include NGWA's Guidelines for the Construction of Loop Wells for Vertical Closed Loop Ground Source Heat Pump Systems and Lexicon of Groundwater and Water Well System Terms, as well as Groundwater & Wells, third edition. For more information about other NGWA-recommended study materials, visit the certification study materials section of the online NGWA bookstore.

Becoming certified

Once the VCL exam has been passed with a score of 70 percent or better, the applicant can send in application materials consisting of the three below forms:
  1. Certification Agreement Form — applicant agrees to adhere to the statutes of the NGWA Voluntary Certification Program and its policies.
  2. Candidate Reference Form — applicant must provide the names of two references who can verify experience.
  3. Current Affidavit — a signed document claiming the individual has never been convicted of any civil or criminal legal action as a result of professional activities relating to geothermal applications.

Maintaining certification

All certification renewal materials must be received at NGWA on or before December 31 of the renewing year. Renewal materials consist of:
  1. Annual recertification fees
  2. Annual continuing education points (CEP form) — an individual must obtain seven (7) continuing education points each calendar year; four (4) of the seven (7)points required for renewal must be from geothermal/heat pump-related educational offerings, while the remaining three (3) points may be earned within the same continuing education offering pool as a CWD, CPI, or CWD/PI
  3. Current Affidavit — a signed document claiming the individual has never been convicted of any civil or criminal legal action as a result of professional activities relating to geothermal applications.
