What is a legislative fly-in?
NGWA’s 16th Annual Groundwater Industry Legislative Conference, also known simply as the NGWA Washington Fly-in, that took place February 25-26, 2013, put groundwater professionals in touch with the men and women who set the nation’s groundwater policy.
The first day of the Fly-in provided attendees with the strategic information needed to navigate the water supply, remediation, and geothermal heat pump markets. Select agency officials and congressional leadership as mapped out their agendas and priorities for the next few years, allowing participants to hear firsthand what the projections are for existing and new water programs, what regulations might decrease or increase, and how businesses might take advantage of new opportunities. Ask the speakers questions. And have input into those discussions.
The first day’s program also included presentations to prepare attendees for congressional office visits taking place on the second day. Participants received tips for conducting successful Hill meetings (click here to view the video), and reviewed “leave-behind” materials that were shared with congressional offices.
Tuesday afforded Fly-in participants the chance to meet in their congressional members’ offices to discuss groundwater’s role in the nation’s water supply and the importance of monitoring data to optimize its use, how geothermal heat pump systems installed by qualified professionals are a key part of any energy plan, the role that geoscience research plays in scientific management as well as job creation, and global water needs.
