Water Well Pump Systems (in development)

The BSR/NGWA 03-1X Water Well Pump Systems Standard was conceived to fill the need for a voluntary consensus standard related to water well pumping systems.  The standard is intended to protect groundwater resources and public health, to include guidance on performance requirements for pumps used in water wells, and to help ensure professionals are capable of proper selection, design, and installation of pumping systems.

Topics of the Standard

The Water Well Pump Systems Standard draft outline includes the following sections:

  • Pump System Design
  • Well Head
  • Pumps
  • Tanks, Metering, Valves, and Piping
  • Electrical Concerns
  • Operational Concerns

Now Seeking Volunteers!

NGWA is currently seeking volunteers from all interest categories for the Water Well Pump Systems Standard.  Volunteers will meet to review the draft outline and provide input for content to be included in the draft standard.  If you are interested in participating as a voting member, please submit a standard development task group application.  For more information or to submit your application, contact Jessica Michell, industry practices administrator, at the below contact information.

Timeline of Development

The standard development process is crucial to ensure an open, unbiased document that has been available to any interested parties for comment and review.  That said, there is structure to the commenting process.  Comments may be submitted at any time, however the standard developer (NGWA) can choose to hold comments unrelated to a current change until the next open revision.  This allows the process to move forward without being held up in comment resolution at all times.

The following dates serve as important milestones for both the development of the standard and the involvement of industry stakeholders.

  • May 8, 2015 NGWA draft standard Project Initiation Notification announced via ANSI’s Standards Action
  • May 8, 2015-Present  NGWA seeking volunteers to participate in standard development

Industry Involvement

ANSI requirements for standard development include that all interested parties must be included in the process.  This is achieved through a variety of ways, including a balance of interest categories of individuals who participate in the voting process, public review of any substantive change for all interested parties, and transparency in the notification of standard activities.

The NGWA draft Water Well Pump Systems Standard will include individuals volunteering to participate in the voting process, including those from the following interest categories:

  • Contractors — those who complete the physical groundwater work
  • Manufacturers/Suppliers — those who make the equipment to install the materials to retrieve the groundwater or provide the contractors with this equipment or these materials
  • Other — those who have a demonstrable material interest in a proposed or existing standard that do not identify with the other interest categories listed

How can you get involved?

If you are interested in participating as a voting member for the development of the Water Well Pump Systems Standard, please submit a standard development task group application.  For more information or to submit your application, contact Jessica Michell, industry practices administrator, at the below contact information.
