National Ground Water Association Announces Protect Your Groundwater Day Will Be September 4, 2024

Annual reminder for water well owners to test, tend, and treat their private water systems.

(Westerville, OH – July 22, 2024) – The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) and WellOwner.org have announced Protect Your Groundwater Day will be held on September 4, 2024.

The annual event raises awareness on the importance of proper maintenance and testing of water wells to encourage nationwide participation in the protection of groundwater. NGWA encourages annual inspections of private water systems by certified water well contractors to ensure systems are operating to produce safe and healthy water.

“On Protect Your Groundwater Day, we encourage everyone to take action in the vital role groundwater plays in our daily lives and the health of our environment. It is up to all of us to safeguard this precious resource,” says NGWA President David Traut, MGWC, MGWC/CVCLD.

Facts on groundwater usage:

  • From 2010 to 2015, groundwater use in the United States increased by 8.3%  while surface water use declined by 13.9%.

  • The United States uses 82.3 billion gallons per day of fresh groundwater for public supply, private supply, irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, thermoelectric power, and other purposes.

  • More than 15.9 million water wells for all purposes serve the United States.

  • Texas leads the nation in the number of irrigation wells with 81,511.

  • Michigan, with an estimated 1,121,075 households served by private water wells, is the largest state market, followed by Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, and Florida.

“Protect Your Groundwater Day is an opportunity for us to educate and empower well owners to take action in preserving their water wells,” says NGWA CEO Terry S. Morse, CAE, CIC. “Promoting proper maintenance and testing, we can ensure the long-term viability of groundwater resources.”

Wellowner.org operated by NGWA offers private well owners tip sheets on water well maintenance and a “How to Find a Contractor” page which allows the public to find certified water well contractors in their area.

NGWA and Wellowner.org encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to participate in this year’s important event by permitting annual inspection to their private water system by a certified water well contractor.
