National Ground Water Association Supports Florida Residents Following Hurricane Helene

Navigating storm challenges: Resources for hurricane and flood safety for Private Wells

(WESTERVILLE, OH – October 21, 2024) The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) is extending its support and resources to the  residents of Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia, who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. The hurricane, which caused mass flooding throughout the southeast, impacted many rural communities, which heavily utilize private water systems.

The flooding of water well systems can lead to permanent system damage and the possibility of water contamination. Exposure to E. coli, coliform, and other pathogenic microbes from human and animal fecal matter has occurred following major flooding events.

Private wells that are susceptible to flooding or potential contamination include:

  • Older wells, completed in areas now designated as floodplains

  • Wells in which the casing is not finished above the high-water level

  • Wells not adequately capped or sealed, or older wells with shallow grout or insufficient surface seal

  • Wells in areas structurally unstable, or where previous erosion or subsidence has compromised the structure and landform

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Florida during this challenging time following Hurricane Helene,” said NGWA CEO Terry S. Morse, CAE, CIC. “We are committed to supporting them by providing essential information and resources to ensure the safety of all residents.”

Immediate tips for private well owners include:

  1. Stay away from the pump while it is flooded to avoid electrical shock

  1. Do not drink the water from the well or use it for washing to avoid becoming sick

  1. Get help from a qualified water well contractor or pump installer

These recommendations aim to help residents safeguard their water supply, prevent contamination, and ensure the safety of their wells. Individuals can minimize potential health risks and can protect their groundwater resources.

Access to clean and safe water is essential for the well-being and health of individuals and communities, especially during a crisis. NGWA is dedicated to ensuring that Floridians have the necessary information and tools to address their water needs after Hurricane Helene.
