Dr. John F. Devlin approved to lead Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation.
(WESTERVILLE, OH — December 17, 2020) The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) is excited to announce Dr. John “Rick” Devlin as the new editor-in-chief of their research publication Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation® (GWMR).
A renowned researcher and lecturer, Devlin has been teaching both in the United States and internationally for more than 30 years. Devlin is currently a professor in the Geology Department at the University of Kansas. His research interests center on organic transformations and transport in the subsurface, granular iron reactivity for groundwater remediation, and aquifer characterization by direct velocity measurements.
Devlin has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of GWMR after serving as associate editor since 2012. Devlin was also associate editor of Hydrogeology Journal from 2017-2019.
“Ground Water Monitoring & Remediation serves a vital role in the hydrogeological community,” Devlin said. “I am excited and honored to take on the editorship of GWMR and continue the trajectory set by the previous editors, especially my predecessor, Neil Thomson, in raising the journal’s profile and quality.”
In his term as editor-in-chief, Devlin expects research on PFAS and other emerging contaminants to play a significant role in the future of GWMR.
“PFAS, and related compounds, are shaping up to be a major contaminant problem in the near future. All of the previous experience we have had, and the sophistication of methods we have developed, will have to be brought to bear on this problem,” said Devlin. “GWMR is ideally placed to publish not only the hydrogeological contributions, but also those in the related disciplines that overlap with hydrogeology scientifically and for the realization of practical outcomes.”
An active member of NGWA and the Geological Society of America, Devlin has also held memberships in the American Chemical Society, the Geochemical Society, and the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH/AIH). He was the recipient of the Leo M. & Robert M. Orth Water Resources Award in 2020.
“Rick Devlin is a highly respected groundwater researcher and I’m pleased he will become Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation’s fifth editor-in-chief,” said NGWA Director of Publications Thad Plumley. “GWMR is the only technical journal that focuses exclusively on the field of monitoring and cleanup, and Rick is the ideal groundwater professional to lead it right now. I can’t wait to see what the next several years bring.”
Devlin lives in Kansas with his wife and has a daughter who is a nurse in Toronto, Canada. He enjoys playing guitar, piano, and clawhammer banjo.
