Millions of people across the world depend on groundwater professionals to provide clean, safe, and affordable drinking water

(WESTERVILLE, OH — February 11, 2020) The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) is celebrating World Water Day by recognizing groundwater professionals for their vital work in providing clean, safe, and affordable drinking water worldwide.

World Water Day is an annual UN observance day that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources across the globe.

Ninety-six percent of the world’s freshwater is groundwater and NGWA has determined that 44 percent of the U.S. population depends on groundwater for its drinking water supply — be it from either a public source or private well. In the United States alone there are thousands of groundwater professionals working to study and access groundwater including water well drillers, pump and drilling manufacturers, hydrologists, and groundwater scientists.

“On World Water Day, NGWA would like to express our sincere gratitude for those working every day to provide us with clean and safe drinking water. It’s a hard job and its importance is often overlooked,” said NGWA CEO Terry S. Morse, CAE, CIC. “With the current COVID-19 pandemic and public uncertainty about the future, we should all take a moment and have the peace of mind knowing the work these individuals provide us day in and day out will keep clean water flowing.”
