April 17, 2025

The Environmental Council of the States published a compendium that outlines the various aspects of PFAS policies and science to showcase important information on state actions to protect human health and the environment.

Key points in the compendium include:

  • States are carrying out direct and diverse PFAS actions
  • Twenty-two states have PFAS action plans with nine more states preparing them
  • Forty-four states manage PFAS issues through task forces or workgroups
  • Regulatory processes vary with 30 states having drinking water guidance and 18 with standards. Some states specifically address groundwater as well as other media.

The paper offers a national summary of PFAS actions as well as individual findings from 52 jurisdictions — specifically, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (hereinafter, states). Click here to access it.
