NGWA mourns loss of former Darcy Lecturer

Former Darcy Lecturer Stephen E. Silliman, Ph.D., passed away on April 1. He was 68.

Silliman was the dean of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. His academic career also saw him serve as the dean of engineering at Gonzaga University, and professor emeritus of the department of civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences at the University of Notre Dame.

He was NGWA’s Darcy Lecturer in 2011. He offered host institutions one of two talks that centered on his research projects in Benin, West Africa, where he joined students in working with villages to determine ways to help protect existing water wells from human and animal waste contamination.

While at Notre Dame, Silliman engaged in foundational research projects related to the study of groundwater contaminant transport. He was published throughout his career in NGWA’s Groundwater® and Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation®. He also served as an associate editor for Groundwater.
