Overview:

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is increasingly used to enhance local freshwater supplies. However, geochemical shifts caused by MAR can mobilize toxic, naturally occurring metal(loid)s, including arsenic, from aquifer sediments into groundwater. This presentation provides an overview of hydrologic and geochemical processes controlling arsenic mobility during infiltration and injection-based MAR projects. The presentation also summarizes recently developed guidance documents on strategies to limit arsenic mobilization during MAR.
