EPA publishes PFAS groundwater cleanup standards

December 23, 2019

As part of its PFAS action plan, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published standards to aid in in the cleanup of groundwater.

The guidance recommends setting a “screening level” of 40 parts per trillion to determine if PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) or PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) is present at a site and may warrant further attention.

The EPA said if no state or tribal standards exist, the agency recommends using its PFOA and PFOS Lifetime Drinking Water Health Advisory level of 70 parts per trillion.

The guidance applies solely to PFOA and PFOS.
