The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requested last month nominations of chemicals, microbes, or other substances that are not currently regulated in drinking water for possible inclusion on the Sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6).
The EPA requests that nominations include information showing the nominated contaminant is known or anticipated to occur in public water systems and indicating that it may have adverse health effects on humans.
It should be noted that 76 percent of all community water systems are groundwater-supplied.
Proposed contaminants determined to have significant adverse effects, most likely to occur in a public water system, and approved for CCL 6 may be proposed for unregulated contaminant monitoring under the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) in the future.
Nominations must be received on or before April 18, 2023. They must be sent through the federal eRulemaking Portal and identified by Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OW-2022-0946.
