Water Well Journal® earned a 2023 APEX Grand Award from Communications Concepts, honoring it with other top business publications today.
The Grand Award is the highest honor given by Communications Concepts, a group that provides educational information for publishing and marketing professionals.
Of the 1100 submissions this year, just 100 Grand Awards were given in 14 categories. WWJ was recognized for a column authored by Editor Thad Plumley. His Editor’s Note from the December 2022 issue titled “Advice from Mom” was one of just 19 honored in the Writing category.
This marks the 21st consecutive year WWJ has earned an APEX award. It has won 37 total APEX Awards in its history, most in the groundwater industry.
WWJ has been recognized three times with Grand Awards, including 2010 when Plumley won with another Editor’s Note. Its first Grand Award came in 2003 for an article by Jill Ross, the editor of WWJ at the time.
“It’s always wonderful when WWJ is recognized by Communications Concepts,” Plumley said. “It’s very humbling to have it happen for a column that focused on the passing of my mother. I’m glad her advice touched others as it has certainly shaped me.”

The advisory board provides strategic direction for the council’s programming, benefits, member magazine, and learning events.
The board was announced at the AM&P Network Amplify 2023 conference June 27-28 in Washington, D.C. Plumley served as the board secretary last year. This puts him on track to become the board president in 2024.
