NGWA Life Member Gregory D. Buffington, PE, passed away suddenly on October 27.
Buffington was a sales engineer and general manager for Layne Christensen, A Granite Company, in Aurora, Illinois, until he retired in 2014. After retirement, he continued as a consultant for Layne.
He had a passion for the legislative process and attended 13 NGWA Fly-In conferences through the years to represent Illinois and lobby for groundwater protection.
Buffington was also extremely active in supporting groundwater in his state. He served on the board of directors for the Illinois Association of Groundwater Professionals for 31 years and was president of IAGP from 1998-2000.
He was also a founding member of the IEPA’s Northeastern Illinois Regional Groundwater Protection Planning Committee and served on the Northeast Illinois Planning Commission’s Water Supply Task Force. He was the founding director and past chair of the Illinois Groundwater Association and served for 35 years on the American Water Works Association Standards Committee on water wells.
