EPA proposes adding four sites to the Superfund National Priorities List

September 9, 2024

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed on September 5 adding four sites to the Superfund National Priorities List.

Two of the sites involve groundwater contamination. Of the other sites, one has subsurface soil gas impacts, and the fourth site has soil contamination from lead.

The NPL is a list of known sites throughout the United States and its territories where releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants pose significant threats to human health and the environment. By adding this site to the NPL, the EPA can continue to assess the human health and environmental risks associated to the site and determine if remedial action is needed.

The proposed sites are listed below along with their location, docket number and impact.

  • Exide Technologies-Vernon, Vernon, California, EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0376: TCE contamination in groundwater
  • Historic Potteries, Trenton, New Jersey, EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0374: Lead in soils
  • Carlisle Village Cleaners, Albuquerque, New Mexico, EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0375: PCE and TCE in subsurface soil gas
  • J.H. Baxter, Eugene, Oregon, EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0377: Creosote and PHP in groundwater.

A fifth site previously proposed is now added to the National Priorities List. It is Afterthought Mine in Bella Vista, California (EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0066). The site’s wetlands are contaminated with heavy metals.

The National Priorities List includes sites with the nation’s most serious uncontrolled or abandoned releases of contamination. This list serves as the basis for prioritizing the EPA Superfund cleanup funding and enforcement actions.
