The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on March 5 full deletion of one site and partial deletion of three sites from the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites requiring cleanup because of endangerment to human health or the environment. Three of the sites involve groundwater contamination.
The EPA and the states, through their designated state agencies, have determined that all appropriate response actions under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) have been completed. However, this deletion does not preclude future actions under Superfund.
The sites, location, deletion status, contaminants, and actions are:
- Del Amo — Los Angeles, California: Partial Deletion — Chemical mixture — Soil Vapor Extraction to protect people in buildings
- Mercury Refining Inc. — Colonie, New York: Full Deletion — Mercury and PCB — Long-term monitoring of remaining groundwater contamination left in place
- Lawrence Aviation Industries Inc. — Port Jefferson Station, New York: Partial Deletion — TCE, DCE, PCE, heavy metals, and other contaminants — Groundwater in long-term monitoring
- Redstone Arsenal (USARMY/NASA) — Huntsville, Alabama: Partial Deletion — polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides (including DDT and toxaphene) and metals — Soil and sediment removal on portion of site with long-term monitoring and institutional land use controls.
