NGWA mourns loss of former employee

March 27, 2025

Glen Hackett, a former employee of NGWA, passed away on March 17. He was 70.

An Association employee from 1985-1987 when it was known as the National Water Well Association, Hackett authored and coauthored several books and reports on well construction and rehabilitation. He also authored three papers in Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation®, one of NGWA’s scientific journals, after he left NGWA.

Among the publications he coauthored while on staff was EPA/600/2-87/035 DRASTIC: A Standardized System for Evaluating Ground Water Pollution Potential Using Hydrogeologic Settings. He was instrumental for the Association in the DRASTIC map concept.

DRASTIC is a method used to assess groundwater vulnerability to pollution by evaluating seven hydrogeological parameters. The name is an acronym that stands for:

  • Depth to groundwater
  • Recharge rate
  • Aquifer media
  • Soil media
  • Topography
  • Impact of vadose zone
  • Conductivity of the aquifer.

Hackett began his career at the Geauga County Health Department in northern Ohio and continued his environmental consulting career at Bennett & Williams in Columbus, Ohio, after leaving NGWA. He retired in 2020.
