EPA announces cleanup at groundwater-contaminated sites

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on March 4 it is issuing a notice of intent to delete seven Superfund sites and partially delete two others from the National Priorities List (NPL) and is requesting public comments on this action by April 3.

Seven of the nine sites impacted groundwater and groundwater remediation efforts have taken place. The EPA has determined that the appropriate response actions are now complete. The sites are listed below.

One site that was impacted by petroleum and pesticides in Noyack, New York, is cleaned and meeting drinking water standards. Another site previously contaminated by volatile organic chemicals in Barrio Palos, Blancos, Puerto Rico, has its groundwater being treated for water supply to the community.

Five other sites have long-term monitoring and institutional controls to eliminate access to contaminated groundwater left in place.
