Drinking water contaminant candidate list seeking public comment

April 8, 2026

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published its sixth Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List (CCL) on April 5 and is now seeking public comment on it.

The list is published every five years to consider potential regulation of contaminants at public water systems. Comments are due to the EPA by June 5.

The sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6) includes 75 chemicals, four chemical groups (disinfection byproducts, microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and pharmaceuticals) and nine microbes.

Groundwater is a primary exposure pathway for the CCL 6 chemicals and about 60 percent to 70 percent of them have confirmed or probable groundwater occurrence. The strongest groundwater presence occurs among volatile organic chemicals, pesticides, explosives, PFAS, and emerging contaminants.
