Overview:

Over the past 2-3 decades, starting in northern Europe, interest in Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PiE) has burgeoned among researchers, regulators, and the industry. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) have been detected at concentrations of ecological and human health concern in groundwater and surface waters in literally every corner of the globe. This presentation investigates the roots of the PiE issues, the sources of API as emerging contaminants, and strategies for coming to grips with the challenges PiE poses to our society.
